Glossary

Since some of these terms may be new to the non-Gearheads among us, we decided a small glossary might be useful.  Without further ado:

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is a wireless technology used to interconnect various devices such as phones, computers, and peripherals over short distances without need of cables.

GPS, or Global Positioning System

GPS is a navigation system based on measurements from a constellation of satellites from which your location, speed, direction and time can be accurately determined and has been a popular addition to vehicles and other devices.

NAS, or Network Attached Storage

Network Attached Storage refers to a hard drive or RAID array attached directly to the network without needing to be connected to a host computer.

PMP, or Portable Media Player

A Portable Media Player (sometimes Portable Multimedia Player, or Portable Video Player) is a handheld device capable of storing and playing various kinds of digital media, both audio, video and images, using hard drives, microdrives, or flash memory for storage.  Sometimes these devices also have the capability to record audio or video as well.

RAID, or Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks

RAID refers to the integrated use of two or more hard disk drives in various configurations in order to achieve greater performance, reliability via redundancy, or larger disk volume sizes through combination into a single volume.

SMS, or Short Message Service

SMS is a protocol used to send short text messages of up to 160 characters between mobile devices, and is commonly referred to as text messaging.

UMPC, or Ultra-Mobile Personal Computer

A small lightweight, tablet PC with an on-screen keyboard, weighing not more than two pounds with an installed hard drive for all content, the Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) uses the Windows Tablet PC OS with Touch Pack software. Touch Pack provides a thumb-operable on-screen keyboard in addition to enlarged buttons for menus that are easier to tap with the fingers. Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity are present.
